Player of the Weekend

Matheus Cunha became only the fourth player in Premier League history – after Kanu, Robin van Persie and Sergio Agüero – to score a hat-trick as an opponent at Stamford Bridge.

The Wolves man was at his clinical best as Gary O’Neil’s side embarrassed the hosts and heaped yet more pressure on Mauricio Pochettino.

Wolves’ 4-2 win in west London saw them leapfrog the Blues and go into 10th position in the table having now only scored one fewer than the squad assembled for £1 billion.

Cunha himself has now scored nine and assisted six goals this term – a 300% return on last season’s goal contribution total.

The Brazilian forward is absolutely loving life in the Black Country right now and with the club now just a few points off Manchester United in sixth, must surely have European football on their minds.

Team of the Weekend

Goal of the Weekend

Clearly Arsenal’s second goal against Liverpool on Sunday wasn’t the best goal this weekend.

But in the larger context of the season as a whole, it could well be the most important goal scored in the top flight in 2023/24.

Jürgen Klopp’s side came into the clash at the Emirates as table-toppers and enjoying a momentum which many thought would power them through to another title.

Instead, the visitors struggled under the weight of expectation and with the intensity of Arsenal’s press. They were level going into the break but midway through the second half, disaster struck.

A completely uncharacteristic mix-up between Alisson and Virgil van Dijk saw Gabriel Martinelli pounce for his easiest finish of the campaign so far.

It was a goal that no one could have predicted, but a goal that could well send the Premier League trophy away from Anfield come May.

Result of the Weekend

Comfortable 3-0 wins at home used to be Manchester United’s stock in trade.

But what shocked many at Old Trafford this weekend was how unexpectedly easy they found their victory over West Ham.

It was, whisper it, a bit like the old days.

Rasmus Højlund seems to have finally found his feet after a nightmare first six months with the Dane scoring for the fourth consecutive game.

And then after the break Alejandro Garnacho netted a smart double to see the Red Devils cruise to all three points.

Added to that the continued brilliance of Kobbie Mainoo and things seem alright in the world for Erik ten Hag all of a sudden.

Match of the Weekend

This was a weekend of brilliant matches but one fixture stood head and shoulders above the rest.

Newcastle’s clash with Luton didn’t, on paper anyway, look like it would be a classic Premier League encounter.

But that’s exactly how it played out with the Magpies coming back from 4-2 down to claim a 4-4 draw in front of a delirious home crowd.

Rob Edwards’ side thought they had enough to come away with all the points after going two goals ahead on the hour mark.

But some brilliance from Kieran Trippier and a superb finish on his return to the side from Harvey Barnes ensured their was a share of the spoils.

This was one of the league’s all-time great games.

Stats of the Weekend

Saturday really was one of the more bonkers days in the Premier League’s 30-year history.

It started with Everton scoring late on to claim a 2-2 draw with Spurs.

In the middle there was Brighton’s 4-1 demolition of rivals Crystal Palace, Burnley scoring in injury time for their own 2-2 draw with Fulham and that crazy game at St James’ Park.

It then ended with Aston Villa scoring four before half time against Sheffield United and ultimately winning 5-0.

There were 25 goals in total, the most ever on a single day with five matches being played.

Quotes of the Weekend

After refusing to blame referees for mistakes earlier in the season, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou wasn’t so generous this weekend as his side conceded late on to draw with Everton.

“It just seems to be in general referees are reluctant to call these now and leave to VAR,” said Postecoglou.

“At the moment any contact in the box referees seem reluctant to call. It is disappointing to concede any goal. There were about 30 set-pieces. It is stuff you have to deal with.”

Tottenham have been this season’s great entertainers but the north London club now sit in fifth place, two points behind Aston Villa.
